Overview

General Write-up

Emergencies: There are all kinds of emergencies. Some are short (minor) and others are longer duration (moderate to major). These happen someplace almost every day somewhere. The can be anything from a power outage, severe storm, flooding, earthquakes (not just California, look at what is happening in Oklahoma and other places), being snowed in or many other things. If they don't last very long, you are probably prepared or at least mostly prepared. If they last longer, you may need to increase your prepardness some.

Disasters: These are basically just an emergency that is severe, either because of long duration or the extent of the area affected.

Survival: These are emergencies where normal support services are unavailable. This could be because you are out in the woods (camping, hiking or etc.) or for some other reason you are cut off from "society" / normal support services".

Common Needs: The minimum common needs in all 3 types of emergencies are: Something to Drink (water or other drinking fluids), Food, Shelter, Medical Care, Communications and Protection from the elements, amimals and other predators.

What you need to do:

Evaluate: What are the most likely Disasters/Emergencies that could happen to you where you live.

Plan: Figure out what you would need to be prepared for each type of Disaster/Emergency you are likely to have happen. Make a list of what you will need and plans for how to handle each type of Disaster/Emergency.

Prepare: Obtain the items on your "list of needs" and store them in a place or places that are accessable. Keep a list of everything (an inventory) with your stored prepardness items. Keep a seperate list of item that are parishable or expire with the date that each item needs replacement. Rotate items as necessary.

Communications Equipment

No matter if it's a minor or major disaster or emergency, communications is an important issue. Roads may be closed, phone lines can be down, local cell towers may be down. How do you connect with the outside world for help: rescue, medical aid, supplies or just to contact family. Even an emergency that happens while you fishing, hunting, camping or just traveling. What if you live off the grid? What if you have marginal cell phone service normally and your phone and Internet is down, due to a power outage (this can be caused by a fallen tree, high winds or other damage).

Cell Phones: Any of us with a cell phone know that they are unreliable in the best cercumstances. Dropped calls, no service and garbled calls. This can be just an inconvience if your just talking to a friend, but it can be a disaster in the case of an emergency, Need to call a tow truck, and amblance, etc, then you need that call phone to work. Nothing can work in all situations, if there is no signal nothing will help. Want to rely on the boosters at home from AT&T, Verison, etc. Well that's fine if your internet works, but if it is down they won't work. And they only work when your hone, not on the road. Yet the time you probable need to use your the most is when you regular phone is down, which probably means you internet is also down. But there is a solution. A cell phone amplifier/repeater that doesn't need anything except power and at least a weak cell phone signal (100dBM or more). And these are available for both your house and your vehicle.

Two Way Radios: These can be short range (good for hikers, campers, hunters, family members etc. staying in touch or longer range equipment for staying in touch with the outsice world.

Emergency Radios: Needed to receive emergency broadcasts from the Emergency Broadcast System, Weather Information and more.
