Protection Overview: Shelter, Clothing, Warmth, Light and Personal Safety |
Protection: Besides the need for food and water another basic need is for protection. Protection from the elements and predators. Protection from the elements requires shelter and warmth. Shelter also provides some protection from predators, but may not provide all the protection you might need. |
Shelter |
Shelter OverviewShelter provides Protection from the elements and from some predators. For many types of emergencies you can just stay in your home. But for others you may have to leave home. This could be because of an evacuation (fire, earthquake, flood, et.), because your home was badly damaged or destroyed or because the area you home is in is no longer safe. There are a variety of options if you need to leave your home. You can stay in a motel or hotel, though they may be filled with other evacuees and this can be expensive as a long term solution. You can also go to a shelter, but his is not a very comfortable environment. If it is going to be for an extended period of time you can also make a camping trip out of the situation. Whether you go with the "Motel/Hotel", "Emergency Shelter" or decide or are forced into the "Camping Option", you need to have a plan in advance (with alternatives for different disasters and in case of blocked roads, etc.) and a list of what you will need and be prepared. If you go with the "Camping Option" and you already have camping equipment, then you are part way there. But only part way. You need a plan you need to keep everything where it can be found and loaded quickly. You also need to inventory your items and evaluate whether you will need additional items. In a emergency/disaster you may only have a few day camping trip, or it could become an extended survival camp. You may not be able to replenish things: such as batteries for your flashlights, fuel for your camp stove, lanterns and camp heaters. So make sure you have alternatives. Such as the ability to cook and heat over a fire and other types of lighting. Don't wait for the evacuation call if you know something may be coming. Start to prepare as soon as you know there might be a problem. For example, we have been evacuated 3 times from 2 locations due to forest fires. In each case we knew a fire was moving in our direction long before an evacuation was called, so we started getting things together before the evacuation (in all 3 cases, we never received the "Official Evacuation Phone Call" and were told by neighbors). Start with your everyday items (like clothing) that you don't have already packed to go. |
