    Indian Wars troops wore insignia on their hats and caps to designate their Branch, Regiment and Company. They were more prevalent at the beginning of the Indian Wars and became less popular as the time went on. There were made of stamped brass. Our Branch Insignia are reproductions are duplicates of the originals.

    The 1872 Cavalry Insignia with Regimental Number and Company Letter (1A, 1E, 7A, 7C & 7E) attached are temporarily unavailable. My supplier has quit making them and I am now having to make these myself and am way behind. As soon as I get all the back-ordered ones done and some for inventory (or if the supplier offers them again) I will offer them again.

    Civil War troops also wore hat cords on their hats to designate their Branch. They were more prevalent at the beginning of the war as they became less popular as the war went on, although they remained more popular than the hat brass. There were made of worsted wool.     The 1872 and 1873 chevrons were significantly different from the Civil War period chevrons. The chevron was a piece of branch and service colored wool facing cloth with black silk chain stitch outlining the pattern. The black area on our chevrons is dark blue wool.

   The M1884 Gold Bouillon dress coat chevrons are the same pattern as the M1872 chevrons, except they are made with Gold Bouillon.

    In 1898 the Army authorized cotton chevrons to be used on the khaki uniform. This was so that the coat and chevrons would shrink at the same rate. These cotton chevrons are ONLY for use on the khaki coats.

    Indian War Period and Span-Am Period Leg Stripes - Made out of the same facing wool as the chevrons, these leg stripes are available for you to add to previously manufactured trousers. Made in the USA!

    Please specify rank and branch of service and year you are portraying to get correct color when ordering.

    There is no charge to sew the leg stripes on your custom made trousers at time of order.
