M1846 Enlisted Engineer Dress Tailcoat: is Single Breasted and similar in cut to the 1832 Artillery Dresscoat with trim drifferences. Black Velvet Collar and 3" high Cuffs. Red Piping surrounds the collar and accents the sleeve and tail slashes. A single yellow loop of 1-3/8" lace and with small button adorns the 3" high collar. Black Velvet tail turnbacks with red wool skirt lining. Coat features our 20 oz Dark Blue Wool as standard. Rank is determined by the Epaulet fringe diameter and amount of lace loops on the sleeve slashes. Two 1/2" yellow loops for Pvts and Cpls, 3 for Sgt. There were no staff sgts in the Engineers at this time. One exterior "cap" pocket on the right side.

Correct Engineer buttons are supplied ready for you to sew on. Machine stitched buttonholes. Branch colored cotton front lining, black cotton in back with natural cotton sleeve lining. Rank chevrons were not worn on Engineer Dress Coats until 1851. Five year service chevrons were. If service chevrons are ordered they are placed "point up". Yellow Cloth Engineer Epaulets have brass crescent and are priced separately.
