Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:37 MST

Day / Evening Dress, 19th Century (1800s) Ladies Skirts, Blouses and Dresses
This bustle dress can be worn from 1870s thru the 1880s.

Although this dress, is a two piece, it's designed to be worn with the large bustle, or padded bird cage style, which we also make. See bustle or call on this item.

The picture on the left shows it to be a bodice, separate from the skirt. It's pointed in front with a little ruffle look in back. Buttons down front. Long full 3/4 length sleeves that tie above elbow, yet can be made straight and wrist length if you like. There's lace/ ruffle around collar. Bodice has that sort of a jacket look, that they wore then. At waist there's a tie, that goes around and ties in back.

The top shorter skirt will have material or lace ruffle on the end, along with the lower skirt. Suggest walking length.

This dress can be made to fit a variety of images, from the everyday woman up through a wealthy upper class woman, depending on material and trim. Prices vary according to the materials chosen and the amount of work that goes into making each dress.

We do have the have the slip with the train that goes with this dress, although we haven't had the time to add it, along with the large padded bustle, which is cotton shell with poly fill, instead of horse hair. Just inquire at azrahist@aol.com

Materials: can range from cotton, drapery, and taffeta. See general information above. Call or e-mail Frances to discuss your needs and desires.

Trim and Style (Use): The amount of trim varies with the intended use and social status of the owner. We will add more pictures to show samples of the different levels as we can. For other variations or amounts of trim, please call or email us and talk about your needs/desires.

1873-74 Bustle Day or Tea Dress, 19th Century (1800s) Ladies dresses

This is a two piece, although it looks like one. This was design to go with the bee-hive bustle, which you can find on this site.

It's made of pin stripe cotton with two tone for contrast for the ruffles and the bustle in back.

The bodice/ top has long sleeves, yet can have the 3/4 sleeves for this time period. It comes up to the neck, with a stand up collar and buttons down front, although if you wish can hook and eye down front. And can also have a lay down collar. Also the top is lined and boned and has piping.

NOTE: If using homespun cotton, plaid or drapery material we do strongly suggest a dust ruffle on the end of your skirt.

Trim:
  1. Day - Plain - no ruching / ruffles (Not Shown).
  2. Day/Tea - Sleeve and Sleeve Cap Ruching Trim Only (Not Shown).
  3. Tea - Full Bodice Ruching and Bows, as shown in picture.
Note: Ruching: material making a ruche. Ruche: a strip of pleated lace, net, muslin or other material for trimming or finishing a dress, as at the collar or sleeves.

Ladies 1880s Polonaise & Walking Skirt: Day, Tea or Evening Dress

Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:38 MST

1880s Day / Evening Polonaise and Walking Skirt, 19th Century (1800s) Ladies Skirts, Blouses and Dresses
This is a very beautiful dress that can be worn by most.

The top is a long bodice as you can tell. It can be lined or unlined depending upon material used. There is a tucked point on each side and a the long hanging section in back gathers due to the tucks on the side. The sleeves are 3/4 long sleeves with ruffles. The bodice / top around the neck can be filled with material for a high neck or cut out for an evening look or a blouse/dickie (under blouse/dickie sold separately) could be used to change it back and forth (open and covered). Buttons up the front. Ruffles, fringe or lace outline the bodice edge. The under skirt is rows (10 to 11) of ruffles, as shown. It is not boned.

Suggestions: A quarter moon bustle is normally not required nor suggested. A very stiff slip to make the skirt stand out and/or a 2 bone hoop. Suggest in material, (bodice or skirt) one being print and the other one being solid.

Material (cotton: print and solid okay), color, neck cut. The addition for a gathered under slip, or hoop.

Price for this dress starts at $459.25 for brocade special occasion or light weight drapery material. It can also be made from silk or other more expensive custom fabrics for addition cost. The dress, shown at the above, is the prototype with heavy brocade drapery material, unlined, square neckline bodice (under blouse sold separately), with front button closure. The skirt is of a cotton lining with a woven fabric for the ruffles, hook closure and placket is in center back. Embellishments are of skirt ruffles, black fringe, black buttons, black ribbon bows, and an under-sleeve ruffle made of black lace and fabric. With the heavy drapery it sells for about $940.00 and weighs about 10 pounds.

Note: The Polonaise is a coat-like dress, originally worn by Polish women and was extremely popular in the 1770s and 1780s in Western Europe and North America. It consisted of a fitted bodice with a full skirt, draped in front from the waist and caught up on either side at the back, so that it fell in three large loops. This fashion was derived from the Polish Milk-maids, who would tuck their skirts into the waistband or tie up their skirt tails, in order to keep the hems out of the mud and mire. This Polonaise style dress came back in fashion during the Victorian Era, giving it a more formal look, adding embellishments to the tunic bodice and walking skirt. Fabrics used were light weight linen, cottons, muslin, broadcloth or batiste.

Ladies Bloomers / Pantalets / Pantaloons / Split Drawers

Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:36 MST

Ladies Bloomers / Split Drawers. Victorian & Civil War underpinnings
Not to be confused by Amelia Bloomer, I think the name was a 21st century phrase. In the 1800s they were called drawers an later as pantalets. Drawers/ bloomers were worn crotch less for a lack of words, for easier bathroom use. That way you wouldn't have to pull your drawers down, making it easier to have your hands free for the rest of your clothing.

Some are made with a "V" shape or straight cut waist band. The legs in front are split from the waist band in front to the back. Both legs are sewn to the waist band. There is one row of lace at the bottom of the legs along a couple of rows of tucks for growth or shrinkage.

Drawers are long (ankle length) up till 1863 when the new fashion came into play, especially for the Union states. Then from 1863 on was what is called the short drawers / bloomers, (slightly below the knee cap).

Materials available are: Unbleached Muslin, Bleached Muslin (all white), White cotton blend and White on White Stripe.

Tucks (optional): can be added for looks and used to adjust the length of the legs for an additional cost.

Eyelet Lace (optional): can be added to the bottoms of the legs for looks for an additional cost.

Ladies Camisole / Corset Cover

Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:36 MST

Camisole / Corset Cover
A camisole is the garment / top that you put over the corset to stop the dirt and other soil form getting into your corset. This also hid those corset bones, to give a smoother look to your bodice. Some had short sleeves yet, most were sleeveless, since you had short sleeves on your chemise. The only reason I can think of for short sleeve, is in colder climate or if someone tended to sweat a lot.

This is a must if you don't wear a corset or chemise, to had those unwanted bra lines and see thru bodices.

The design is pretty much the same as the chemise, except for being short, the length of a blouse &/or down around the hip area. There is a casing around the waist where a gorgon ribbon meets in front to tie. One small rows of lace is added on.

Option; Short sleeve or sleeveless. With or without waist tie.

Materials are white cotton, cotton blend or our special white on white light weight strip cotton.

Ladies Chemise

Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:36 MST

Ladies Chemise. Civil War and Victorian underpinnings.
A chemise is what goes on first, under / before the corset to keep the corset clean from your body oils and dirt. The chemise has usually short sleeves and comes to mid calf in length. The top has a "V" or straight cut yoke. It comes with flat light trim/ lace around the sleeve bottom edge. Great if you wear a corset.

We carry the chemise in white cotton, cotton blend & while it lasts, this great white on white stripe light weight cotton, that you see in the picture.

If you want more lace or a set of tucks, e-mail for addition cost, or see below.
