Usually in a civilian outfit (but not always), the vest and trousers will be made of the same wool, while the coat is a harmonizing color. Pewter buttons for fly and suspenders are supplied, but not sewn on. ONE front suspender button per side is standard. Select two front suspender buttons per side if desired. Period trousers also have a 1" higher rise than today's blue jeans and should be worn quite loose. The legs are left un-hemmed so that you can hem them the length that you want. The 1890's Trousers were cut in the "peg top" style, meaning the legs were tapered from the crotch to the ankle. Button fly, side seam front pockets and a single back right hip pocket are standard. Suspenders are still worn with these trousers, as belt loops were not added to civilian men's trousers until the 1920s. Flat front is standard, with pleated front offered as an option. Also, an adjusting belt may be added to the back of the trousers.
Available in Wool in various colors and several colors of cotton twill, including khaki. The Grey Stripe Wool material, as shown, is no longer available.

Single Front Suspenders (1830-on)The single front (#1908) suspenders / braces are made of heavy cotton tape and are adjustable by means of a prong buckle). This style has the single front leather button tabs. They feature the crossed "X" pattern back to help keep the suspenders from falling off your shoulders. |
||
Double (Split) Front Suspenders (1830-on)The double front (#1907) suspenders /braces are also made of heavy cotton tape and are adjustable by means of a prong buckle), but have the split front leather button tabs. These also feature the crossed "X" pattern back to help keep the suspenders from falling off your shoulders. |
||
Double (Split) Front Elastic Bottom Back Suspenders (1857-on)Double button front (#7277) Suspenders - SPECIAL with Elastic Backs - Same as above #1907 suspenders except the lower portion of both back straps has been changed to white elastic. In the photo at left the elastic section has been tinted red for reference. On the actual suspenders the elastic is white and is therefore lighter in color than the off white of the rest of the straps. The elastic portion allows some "give" to the suspenders when bending over. The elastic portion looks similar to the cotton tapeof the straps. Although a friction clasp is shown in the photo, a piercing prong buckle is now used exclusively- see above. These Suspenders are correct for the 1857 (Note: samples were found in the cargo of a ship that sank in 1857 on the Mississippi River) thru 1890 period and for trousers with the double button front on each side. These also feature the crossed "X" pattern back to help keep the suspenders from falling off your shoulders. |

The versatile Full Front Frockcoat comes with a standard length skirt. Skirt can be made shorter for less formal occasions. Coat can be ordered with matching collar or velvet can be used in a harmonizing color scheme to the collar alone or to both the collar and cuffs (as shown). It has an inside left breast pocket and two exterior pockets can be added at the waistline for a dashing effect, especially if the velvet trim is ordered. Cloth covered buttons are supplied, but not sewn on. Proper shirt for this coat is the Pleated Front Dress Shirt for dress occasions and the Bleached White Muslin shirt for everyday use. The Full Front Frockcoat was the "dressed up" coat for the common man, while the well-to-do gentleman would have worn this as his "everyday" coat. It is best to suit the elegance of the clothing to the impression that you wish to portray. Our civilian frockcoat is made from quality lighter weight woolens than our military frockcoat. Need a Vest, Pants, Shirt or Cravat to go with this coat? Click here to go to a page with all of them on a single page.
Periods: The style of these coats changed over time, mostly in the collar, sleeve and body fit. 1800/1816-1830: This has the stand and fall collar, it is cut narrower across the shoulders, a smaller sleeve hole, a more of a tubular sleeve and a more tailored body. When made correctly it is much less comfortable than the 1830 and later coats. We currently do not offer this period of coat. If you are interested, call is to talk about it. 1830-1850 (Dickens and more): This has the rise and fall collar, it is cut narrower across the shoulders, a smaller sleeve hole, a more of a tubular sleeve and a more tailored body. When made correctly it is much less comfortable than the 1850 and later coats. Because most people do not like the true period cut/fit, we modify it somewhat in the body, shoulder and sleeve hole fit to make it more acceptable to modern taste. It is in between the American Civil War fit and the correct earlier fit. 1850 On (Victorian: Civil War / Old West): This is our standard coat. There were style changes to this coat over time, mostly in the collar and lapels. Sometimes there were wide collars and sometimes narrow collars. We cannot cater to the various changes, so we only make the version shown. It has a somewhat wide collar and is most appropriate for 1850 through 1900. Material and Color Samples Page.

Because of the short waist length of this coat, if one wears a vest it will show at the bottom of the coat front. This is quite normal and is the reason why vests usually matched either the trousers or coat so that the vest would blend in and not create a "scene " at the bottom of the coat. Proper shirt for this coat is the Pleated Front Dress Shirt. Our civilian tails coat is made from quality lighter weight woolens than our military frockcoat. Coat comes with two exterior pockets at the waistline and one interior left breast pocket. Coat shown had had an optional exterior upper pocket added. Coat has three (3) cloth covered button front closure, buttons are supplied, but not sewn on. Contrasting wool collar can be added for a distinctive look with the solid color coat. All three pieces match using selected fabrics from our fabric line that were popular during the 1860s. The 1890 Sack Coat/Suit has been discontinued. Information is left here as historical information. The 1890 Sack Suit includes the Coat, Vest and Trousers. All three pieces match using selected fabrics from our fabric line that were popular during the 1890s. The sackcoat is fully lined with Polished cotton in a color to harmonize with the exterior color and has an inside pocket. Notched collar lapel and three cloth covered button front are standard. The coat features three special design exterior pockets- cut and shaped as in the photo. The 1890 Sack Suit Trousers were cut in the "peg top" style, meaning the legs were tapered from the crotch to the ankle. Suspenders are still worn with these trousers, as belt loops were not added to civilian men's trousers until the 1920s. Flat front is standard, with pleated front offered as an option. Our CIVILIAN GREATCOAT / OVERCOAT (at left and #6 pictured below) is cut similar to the military style except two front pockets have been added. Also, there are no turn down cuffs, as on the US Military version and the cape does not have any buttons on it. A lower lay-down style collar is featured. Collar and pocket tops can be trimmed with a contrasting color wool. Research seems to indicate that if a Confederate soldier had a greatcoat at all, it was either captured from Uncle Sam or brought from home. Our coat has five cloth buttons on the front and two in the back on the adjusting belts. A heavy cotton half lining (to the waist) is standard. For the ultimate in warmth, a wool body lining is available at extra cost.

Frontier Classics - Jesse James Duster: 60% cotton/ 40% linen, full length, five button front, two front pockets, riding split in back, machine washable. It comes in Natural color. This is a version of the 1910 Car Coat. This is the same coat that is often pictured in Hollywood westerns, but according to all our research it did not exist at that time. A more authentic coat for the 1880s on would be the Cowboy Pommel Slicker. The name "Jesse James Duster" is just a name given to this coat by Frontier Classics, not an authentic descriptor. There was a linen cowboy / military duster, but it was just a frock coat made from linen.

As you can tell it is almost a straight last, but it is a left/right. That means that the arch in the boot will make it comfortable for walking as for riding. A steel shank will give a long life to this fine boot. The leg has been widened so you can wear these boots outside of your trousers. The leg height is 17", proportioned to the size. It is lined with calf skin, has pull tabs (not mule ears) on the outside of the top. The toe is a moderate square and the heel is 1 1/4". The top of the boot is about 12" from the ground, depending on the size. The leather is black and smooth but not a high shine. It has a full lining. This boot should be good for drovers, prospectors and shooters (before the cowboy boots). Be sure to have your calf measurement when ordering. The circumference of the boot varies with size and will fit most men. It can be stretched to accommodate larger calves. These ship from Florida. Normal delivery time is 5 to 10 days, IF your size is out of stock they will normally take 2 to 6 weeks. |

This boot was originally called the M1851 Artillery Driver's Boot, as it was originally only issued to Artillery Drivers. During the American Civil War they were also issued to Cavalry troops and continued as the Cavalry Boot until replaced by the Model 1872 Boot, which is a modified version of this boot. This boot is an exact copy, with the exception of two changes. The originals had been machine pegged, nine pegs to the inch. Ours is stitched due to the lack of machine that can duplicate the work of an 1860's pegging machine. And for comfort the boot is lined with calfskin leather from top to toe. The leather in our boot is a semi-rough cowhide especially selected after studying the original boot. They will take a shine after a few polishes or will take Lexol for a "field-worn" look. They have a sewn sole with a ridged shank pegged into place. This boot has a comfortable square toe and a tight-gripping heel. There are no side seam welts. This boot covers an amazing time period. It is ideal for many impressions from just after 1800 through 1900 and beyond. It is suitable for 1800's miners, teamsters, cattlemen, farmers, Indian Wars, Cowboy Shooters, etc.. Mail order catalogues printed in the 1890s show a wide assortment of prices and qualities in styles just like these. According to Quartermaster records, most shoes and boots purchased had sewn soles. The pegged sole booties were purchased for $1.25 and $1.30 per pair as opposed to the average of about $1.90 for sewn soles, but the sewn soles were preferred. These ship from Florida. Normal delivery time is 5 to 10 days, IF your size is out of stock they will normally take 2 to 6 weeks. |
