Civilian Cotton and Wool Trousers / Pants (1850s on)

Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:46 MST

Civilian Trousers / Pants
Grey Stripe Wool
No longer available
Our 1858 - 1889 Civilian style trousers feature a slightly different cut than the military trousers and different wools and fabrics are used. They come standard with side seam pockets. Mule Ear Pockets are available as an extra cost item. A right hand waistline watch pocket can be added as an option. Civilian trousers make an excellent Confederate Late War impression also.

Usually in a civilian outfit (but not always), the vest and trousers will be made of the same wool, while the coat is a harmonizing color. Pewter buttons for fly and suspenders are supplied, but not sewn on. ONE front suspender button per side is standard. Select two front suspender buttons per side if desired.

Period trousers also have a 1" higher rise than today's blue jeans and should be worn quite loose. The legs are left un-hemmed so that you can hem them the length that you want.

The 1890's  Trousers were cut in the "peg top" style, meaning the legs were tapered from the crotch to the ankle.  Button fly, side seam front pockets and a single back right hip pocket are standard. Suspenders are still worn with these trousers, as belt loops were not added to civilian men's trousers until the 1920s.  Flat front is standard, with  pleated front offered as an option.

Also, an adjusting belt may be added to the back of the trousers.

Civilain Single Front Suspenders, 19th Century (1800s) Men's Clothing

Single Front Suspenders (1830-on)

The single front (#1908) suspenders / braces are made of heavy cotton tape and are adjustable by means of a prong buckle). This style has the single front leather button tabs. They feature the crossed "X" pattern back to help keep the suspenders from falling off your shoulders.

Civilain Split / Double Front Suspenders, 19th Century (1800s) Men's Clothing

Double (Split) Front Suspenders (1830-on)

The double front (#1907) suspenders /braces are also made of heavy cotton tape and are adjustable by means of a prong buckle), but have the split front leather button tabs. These also feature the crossed "X" pattern back to help keep the suspenders from falling off your shoulders.

Civilain Split / Double Front Suspenders with elastic, 19th Century (1800s) Men's Clothing

Double (Split) Front Elastic Bottom Back Suspenders (1857-on)

Double button front (#7277) Suspenders - SPECIAL with Elastic Backs - Same as above #1907 suspenders except the lower portion of both back straps has been changed to white elastic. In the photo at left the elastic section has been tinted red for reference. On the actual suspenders the elastic is white and is therefore lighter in color than the off white of the rest of the straps. The elastic portion allows some "give" to the suspenders when bending over. The elastic portion looks similar to the cotton tapeof the straps. Although a friction clasp is shown in the photo, a piercing prong buckle is now used exclusively- see above.

These Suspenders are correct for the 1857 (Note: samples were found in the cargo of a ship that sank in 1857 on the Mississippi River) thru 1890 period and for trousers with the double button front on each side. These also feature the crossed "X" pattern back to help keep the suspenders from falling off your shoulders.

Civilian Frock Coat

Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:45 MST

Civilain Frockcoat in Tan, 19th Century (1800s) Men's Clothing
This coat first appeared about 1816. Probably of military origin. Body was always fitted, skirts hung strait down from waist center front. First worn as undress, but by 1850 used for formal wear when it replaced the Tails Coat as the dress coat.

The versatile Full Front Frockcoat comes with a standard length skirt. Skirt can be made shorter for less formal occasions. Coat can be ordered with matching collar or velvet can be used in a harmonizing color scheme to the collar alone or to both the collar and cuffs (as shown). It has an inside left breast pocket and two exterior pockets can be added at the waistline for a dashing effect, especially if the velvet trim is ordered. Cloth covered buttons are supplied, but not sewn on. Proper shirt for this coat is the Pleated Front Dress Shirt for dress occasions and the Bleached White Muslin shirt for everyday use.

The Full Front Frockcoat was the "dressed up" coat for the common man, while the well-to-do gentleman would have worn this as his "everyday" coat. It is best to suit the elegance of the clothing to the impression that you wish to portray.

Our civilian frockcoat is made from quality lighter weight woolens than our military frockcoat.

Periods: The style of these coats changed over time, mostly in the collar, sleeve and body fit.

1800/1816-1830: This has the stand and fall collar, it is cut narrower across the shoulders, a smaller sleeve hole, a more of a tubular sleeve and a more tailored body. When made correctly it is much less comfortable than the 1830 and later coats. We currently do not offer this period of coat. If you are interested, call is to talk about it.

1830-1850 (Dickens and more): This has the rise and fall collar, it is cut narrower across the shoulders, a smaller sleeve hole, a more of a tubular sleeve and a more tailored body. When made correctly it is much less comfortable than the 1850 and later coats. Because most people do not like the true period cut/fit, we modify it somewhat in the body, shoulder and sleeve hole fit to make it more acceptable to modern taste. It is in between the American Civil War fit and the correct earlier fit.

1850 On (Victorian: Civil War / Old West): This is our standard coat. There were style changes to this coat over time, mostly in the collar and lapels. Sometimes there were wide collars and sometimes narrow collars. We cannot cater to the various changes, so we only make the version shown. It has a somewhat wide collar and is most appropriate for 1850 through 1900.

Civilain Morning Coat (Cutaway / Riding Coat) in Chocolate Brown, 19th Century (1800s) Men's Clothing
The fashionable MORNING COAT (Cutaway) (also known as the Riding Coat) was usually worn for more formal occasions during the morning or early afternoon. It became known as the "Morning Coat" as riding was a popular morning exercise for a gentleman. Worn for more informal occasions, eventually taking the place of the Frock Coat. It features the rounded "slope away" front with single button closure and higher waistline. Velvet trim can be added as seen in picture. It has an inside left breast pocket. Front pockets are NOT available on this coat. A cloth covered button is supplied, but not sewn on. Proper shirt for this coat is the Pleated Front Dress Shirt.

Our civilian morning frock is made from quality lighter weight woolens than our military frockcoat.

Civilian Tails Coat / Tailcoat

Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:45 MST

Civilain Tailscoat (Tail Coat) in Black, 19th Century (1800s) Men's Clothing
Victorian in Black
Civilain Tailscoat (Tail Coat) in Black (back View), 19th Century (1800s) Men's Clothing
Victorian - Back
The Tailcoat needs very little introduction. It is probably one of the most impressive coats available. This cut-in tail coat was adopted for all dress occasions and by 1850's was long-bodied and sleek. As early as 1860 it was worn for formal evening dress. The basic principal of cutting a dress-coat had not changed since 1840, only variations in proportions. This coat is available in either single or double breasted version. Velvet trim can be added to the collar or collar and cuffs, if desired. The single breasted version is shown. Two cloth covered buttons are close the front and are supplied, but not sewn on.

Because of the short waist length of this coat, if one wears a vest it will show at the bottom of the coat front. This is quite normal and is the reason why vests usually matched either the trousers or coat so that the vest would blend in and not create a "scene " at the bottom of the coat. Proper shirt for this coat is the Pleated Front Dress Shirt.

Our civilian tails coat is made from quality lighter weight woolens than our military frockcoat.

The 1858 - 1889 Sack Coat is the type of coat that a common businessman might have worn during his working hours. Shopkeepers, small town bankers, etc. gave today's suit coat its humble beginnings. It was considered impolite society for a gentleman to appear in his shirt sleeves before a lady other than his wife. Consequently, men walking around on the streets in their shirt sleeves would be considered "undesirable husband material". The fashionable Sack Suit, pictured at right with a notched collar vest, (a three (3) piece suit: Coat, Vest and Pants) continues to be the mainstay in today's business world. Many different styles of this coat are available on custom order.

The coat is lined with cotton in a color to harmonize with the exterior wool. Roll type sack coat collar is featured. Coat comes with two exterior pockets at the waistline and one interior left breast pocket. Coat shown had had an optional exterior upper pocket added. Coat has three (3) cloth covered button front closure, buttons are supplied, but not sewn on. Contrasting wool collar can be added for a distinctive look with the solid color coat. Proper shirt for this coat is the Bleached White Muslin shirt.

The 1858 - 1889 Sack Suit includes the Coat, Vest and Trousers.  All three pieces match using selected fabrics from our fabric line that were popular during the 1860s.

The 1890 Sack Coat/Suit has been discontinued. Information is left here as historical information.

The 1890 Sack Suit includes the Coat, Vest and Trousers.  All three pieces match using selected fabrics from our fabric line that were popular during the 1890s.  The sackcoat is fully lined with Polished cotton in a color to harmonize with the exterior color and has an inside pocket. Notched collar lapel and three cloth covered button front are standard. The coat features three special design exterior pockets- cut and shaped as in the photo.

The 1890 Sack Suit Trousers were cut in the "peg top" style, meaning the legs were tapered from the crotch to the ankle.

The 1890 Sack Suit notched collar Vest (see above suit photo) is featured with a Polished cotton back and 7 cloth covered button front.  Two waistline pockets are standard.

Our civilian sack coat is made from quality lighter weight woolens than our military coats.

Civilian Great Coat / Caped Overcoat

Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:46 MST

Civilain Greatcoat (Overcoat) in Tan, 19th Century (1800s) Men's Clothing

Our CIVILIAN GREATCOAT / OVERCOAT (at left and #6 pictured below) is cut similar to the military style except two front pockets have been added. Also, there are no turn down cuffs, as on the US Military version and the cape does not have any buttons on it. A lower lay-down style collar is featured. Collar and pocket tops can be trimmed with a contrasting color wool. Research seems to indicate that if a Confederate soldier had a greatcoat at all, it was either captured from Uncle Sam or brought from home. Our coat has five cloth buttons on the front and two in the back on the adjusting belts. A heavy cotton half lining (to the waist) is standard. For the ultimate in warmth, a wool body lining is available at extra cost.

Civilian Vests (Shawl Collar and Notched Collar)

Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:46 MST

Civilain Double Breasted Shawl Collar Vest, 19th Century (1800s) Men's Clothing
The Waistcoat (vest) was single or double breasted, with or without collars and revers and usually waist length. They were usually in rich materials, plain or patterned, often brightly colored. By 1860, for formal wear, were usually lighter in color and fabric. For evening wear were always white or black. Black was correct formal wear from 1860's to the end of the 1880's. CIVILIAN VESTS were quite commonly worn by the enlisted men on both sides of the conflict. The vests were usually brought from home or procured locally. The vest features two front pockets.

The SHAWL COLLAR VEST has a laydown collar style. Five cloth button front closure, the back is adjustable by means of a belt and buckle. Also available in Double Breasted version. The Partial Collar stops at the shoulder seams, while the Full Collar goes all the way around the neck.

The NOTCHED COLLAR VEST has a seven cloth button button front closure. This vest can also be made in the military wools also.

Our civilian vest is made from quality lighter weight woolens, our military woolens and also corduroy.

Civilian Cape (Mantle or Opera Cape)

Ladies, Gentlemen and Officers

Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:45 MST

Civilain Cape in Green, 19th Century (1800s) Men's Clothing
Our CIVILIAN CAPE W/COLLAR, often called a Mantle or Opera Cape. The Standard Cape length extends to the fingertips, longer lengths can be specified at extra cost. It is similar to the mounted style greatcoat cape with lay-down collar.

The civilian cape is made from quality Military weight woolens for warmth. A heavy black cotton lining is standard, with two inside hand size pockets. The front is closed by means of a single black "frog" and hook and eye at the collar or with 5, 7 or 9 cloth covered buttons.

This garment is a very stunning addition to any civilian impression when worn during the Spring and Fall evenings. This cape can be used for Civil War as well as much of the rest of the Victorian period. It can be used by Ladies, Gentlemen and Officers.

Frontier Classics - Jesse James Duster: 60% cotton/ 40% linen, full length, five button front, two front pockets, riding split in back, machine washable. It comes in Natural color. This is a version of the 1910 Car Coat.

This is the same coat that is often pictured in Hollywood westerns, but according to all our research it did not exist at that time. A more authentic coat for the 1880s on would be the Cowboy Pommel Slicker. The name "Jesse James Duster" is just a name given to this coat by Frontier Classics, not an authentic descriptor. There was a linen cowboy / military duster, but it was just a frock coat made from linen.

Cowboy Pommel Slickers / Replica "Fish Brand" Mounted Rain Coat

Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:47 MST

Mustard Yellow Cowboy Duster, Fish Brand Replica
Reproduction of the 1880's "Fish Brand" Cowboy Pommel Slicker manufactured by A. J. Tower Co. (Abner J Tower), Boston (pictured at left). This version is a copy of the modified version of 1885 (Improved to cover rider and saddle, also changed to a red wool stand up collar and brass buttons. Original 1881 model had a fall down collar and zinc buttons.) Reproduced from museum specimens. The fabric is specifically produced to replicate the original linseed oiled slickers, but to have modern attributes. Made of durable waterproof fabric colored to mustard yellow with proper metal buttons. The fabric will not crack when cold, or stick when hot. Split for mounted use and large enough to cover the entire saddle. Ideal protection for inclement weather. As the fabric is not made of plastic or nylon, it is more durable and can be easily repaired if torn. It is available in historic styling with white metal buttons and red collar. Originally made in Mustard Yellow, Black and Forest Green.

Available in Mustard Yellow and Black. Forest Green is not available.

Stove Pipe Boot / Common Boot 1847-1900

by Fugawee Footware

Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:41 MST

19th Century / Stove Pipe Boot - 1847-1900
The Stovepipe boot is dated 1847 to 1900. It was first known as a Common Boot. Reaching almost to the knee and wide enough so the trousers could be tucked. We may find that it dates back further but so far that is the best dates I can find. We have had requests for this two piece boot, so we hope it will fill in for the persona you are trying to create.

As you can tell it is almost a straight last, but it is a left/right. That means that the arch in the boot will make it comfortable for walking as for riding. A steel shank will give a long life to this fine boot.

The leg has been widened so you can wear these boots outside of your trousers. The leg height is 17", proportioned to the size. It is lined with calf skin, has pull tabs (not mule ears) on the outside of the top. The toe is a moderate square and the heel is 1 1/4". The top of the boot is about 12" from the ground, depending on the size. The leather is black and smooth but not a high shine. It has a full lining.

This boot should be good for drovers, prospectors and shooters (before the cowboy boots).

Be sure to have your calf measurement when ordering. The circumference of the boot varies with size and will fit most men.  It can be stretched to accommodate larger calves.

These ship from Florida. Normal delivery time is 5 to 10 days, IF your size is out of stock they will normally take 2 to 6 weeks.

Preacher - Men's Boot, stove pipe with mule ear and pleated tops. Available in Black or Brown.
This is a stove pipe boot. The top is cut into strips 5" to 6" down from the top and sewn over elastic. This gives the impression of the top 5" to 6" being pleated. It has a cowboy walking heel with spur rests. It is 16" tall from the top of the sole to the top of the boot. Not truly a reproduction but still good for the 1870s on.

Civil War Military Style Boots, Light Artillery or Cavalry

by Fugawee Footware

Item Last Updated: Friday, 15-Mar-2024 13:46:18 MST

American Civil War / Civil War military boots
Repro (size 9˝), Original (size 5)
These boots are made by one of the few boot makers in the world that still produces the antique molded front piece. The master boot maker was sent an unworn original model 1859 Boot made in 1865. The top is about 12" tall when measured from the top of the sole and about 14" tall when measured from the floor.

This boot was originally called the M1851 Artillery Driver's Boot, as it was originally only issued to Artillery Drivers. During the American Civil War they were also issued to Cavalry troops and continued as the Cavalry Boot until replaced by the Model 1872 Boot, which is a modified version of this boot.

This boot is an exact copy, with the exception of two changes. The originals had been machine pegged, nine pegs to the inch. Ours is stitched due to the lack of machine that can duplicate the work of an 1860's pegging machine. And for comfort the boot is lined with calfskin leather from top to toe. The leather in our boot is a semi-rough cowhide especially selected after studying the original boot. They will take a shine after a few polishes or will take Lexol for a "field-worn" look. They have a sewn sole with a ridged shank pegged into place. This boot has a comfortable square toe and a tight-gripping heel. There are no side seam welts.

This boot covers an amazing time period. It is ideal for many impressions from just after 1800 through 1900 and beyond. It is suitable for 1800's miners, teamsters, cattlemen, farmers, Indian Wars, Cowboy Shooters, etc.. Mail order catalogues printed in the 1890s show a wide assortment of prices and qualities in styles just like these.

According to Quartermaster records, most shoes and boots purchased had sewn soles. The pegged sole booties were purchased for $1.25 and $1.30 per pair as opposed to the average of about $1.90 for sewn soles, but the sewn soles were preferred.

These ship from Florida. Normal delivery time is 5 to 10 days, IF your size is out of stock they will normally take 2 to 6 weeks.
