Communications Equipment Overview |
No matter if it's a minor or major disaster or emergency, communications is an important issue. Roads may be closed, phone lines can be down, local cell towers may be down. How do you connect with the outside world for help: rescue, medical aid, supplies or just to contact family. Even an emergency that happens while you fishing, hunting, camping or just traveling. What if you live off the grid? What if you have marginal cell phone service normally and your Phone and Internet is down, due to a power outage (this can be caused by a fallen tree, high winds or other damage). It happens to us at times and we have an extremely marginal native cell phone signal here. |
Cell Phone Amplifiers/Repeaters (NO Internet Required) |
Cell Phones: Any of us with a cell phone know that they are unreliable in the best circumstances. Dropped calls, no service and garbled calls. This can be just an inconvenience if your just talking to a friend, but it can be a disaster in the case of an emergency, Need to call a tow truck, an ambulance, etc, then you need that cell phone to work. Nothing can work in all situations, if there is no signal nothing will help. Want to rely on the boosters at home from AT&T, Verison, etc. Well that's fine if your internet works, but if it is down they won't work. And they only work when your home, not on the road. Yet the time you probable need to use your cell phone the most is when you regular phone down, which probably means you internet is also down. But there is a solution. A cell phone amplifier/repeater that doesn't need anything except power and at least a weak cell phone signal (100dBM or more). And these are available for both your house and your vehicle. In my personal situation, we live in an extremely marginal signal area. When I decided to upgrade from a flip-phone to a smart phone I tried 3 different smart phones on the Verizon network. The one that worked the best was an IPhone 5s. Out of 10 attempts to make a call, only one short call was successful the others either would not even dial the call or the call was garbled and the other person could not understand what I was saying. With the Motorola Ultra that I tried, it totally lost the signal 14 times in 6 or 7 hours. This was a from my house. I returned all 3 phones and it cost me return fees and a lot of time doing this. That is when I started researching for something to boost the signal and give me reliable cell phone service, both at the house and in my car. I first looked at the equipment from AT&T and Verizon, these would ONLY while at the house and do nothing for in the car. The problem with their equipment is that they require a working Internet connection (your cell phone basically become an Internet device. That's fine as long as you have Internet and is up and running. The problem here is that when the power is out our Internet connection is only kept running for about 2 hours and then their battery backup fails and then the Internet goes down. Well, the time I would most need to use my cell phone would be for a medical or other emergency when the power is out. Otherwise I could use one of out land lines and wouldn't NEED to use the cell phone. We have UPS (battery backups) that will run our business computer, network and land-line for a least 8 hours. We also have a generator, so we could run thing almost indefinitely. So I started looking for a booster/amplifier that didn't need the Internet. That is when I found Wilson Electronics and their amplifier series. My experience with the Wilson amplifiers so far: As of this point I have only used the Wilson Electronics Sleek® 4G amplifier. (I also purchased a Wilson Electronics AG Pro Quint but haven't had time to install and test it yet, but based on my experience with the Wilson Electronics Sleek® 4G amplifier, it will do even more.) With Wilson Electronics Sleek® 4G amplifier in my car it has boosted my signal from 1 bar (and some "no service" times) to 3 bars at the house. On a trip to Redding California it boosted the signal from 1 bar (and many "no service" times) to 2 or 3 bars (with some 4 to 5 bars, with only 1 - 1 bar reading which only lasted for a few seconds). At my granddaughters house (3 miles from us) it went from "no service" to 2 bars. in Redding I had all 5 bar service until we reached the outlying areas where it was 3 to 4 bars (without the amplifier we had experienced a lot of dead or weak areas). This is why I became a Wilsons Electronics Dealer and will become a Wilson "Certified Installer". To keep the amplifier running during a power outage you will need a UPS (battery backup) which will also protect the equipment from "brown outs" and power surges; as well as keep the equipment running during a power outage. A small, inexpensive one will work for many hours, while the larger expensive ones could keep the equipment running for days. |

For your Car - Wilson Electronics Sleek 4G +23dB Amplifier Kit (cradle unit) (460107)The Wilson Electronics Sleek® 4G cell phone signal booster improves coverage – including 4G, 3G, and 2G data downloads – for subscribers of all U.S. cellular networks (except Clearwire). For specific information about frequency bands, see below. It only works when you in or very close to your car, but you can extend the distance from your car with the use of a bluetooth. With the use of a bluetooth you can be up to 30' or more from the car, depending on conditions and the specific bluetooth. By also boosting all major carriers’ legacy voice and data services, the Sleek 4G provides the user a strong, reliable signal, even where 4G services are unavailable. The Wilson Sleek 4G helps users reduce dropped calls, increase data rates in weak signal areas and originate calls from those dreaded “dead spots.” The Sleek and its outside antenna increases any phone’s output power to the cell tower while improving its ability to detect signals it normally would not, keeping the user more reliably connected. Designed for simple set up, the Sleek can be easily moved from vehicle to vehicle. Built into the Sleek cradle is a Wilson tried and tested bidirectional signal booster and battery charging port. The cradle is ideal for hands free operation in conjunction with a user’s hands free headset or Bluetooth device. The Wilson Electronics Sleek® 4G kit includes the following:
NOTE: Your cell phone MUST remain in the cradle for the amplifer to work with it. This Means you will need to use an ear-mounted or visor bluetooth with this (which is required to meet the hands-free requirements of many state laws and safety issues). If your passengers want to use a cell phone without a bluetooth, you would need to go with the Wilson Electronics Mobile 4G. This amplifier also gives you a better signal (more gain) in weaker areas and also works with a bluetooth devices. So you would want to go with it if you want the maximum performance. But it should be permanently installed, so it can’t easily be transferred from vehicle to vehicle. Note: NO AMPLIFIER will work if there is not enough signal to start with. The Sleek 4G has an MSRP of $179.99.

Wilson Electronics RF Signal DetectorThe Wilson Electronics RF Signal Detector is not a consumer product. It is an expensive item that is used by "Certified Installers" when installing a system for you. It is a piece of test equipment used to find cell phone signals, their strength and with a directional antenna to find the direction to the cell phone towers. When installing a cell phone amplifier it allows the "Certified Installer" to fine tune both the placement of the antenna and for a directional antenna in what direction the antenna should be pointed for the strongest signal. It can also be used to see which cell phone service or services have the strongest signal in your area. It will tell the "Certified Installer" if the existing signals are to weak to even work with an amplifer. If the cell phone signal that you are trying to amplify is less than -104 to -110dBM (the larger the negative number the lower/less the signal) an amplifier will probably not do you any good. Mst smart phones will show the actual signal strength, but the problem with them is it is affected by the sensitivity of that cell phones built in antenna. Not all cell phone antennas are created equal. In my location (very marginal signal) I have seen readings from different smart phones that varied from -95dBM to over -125dBM and you can't seem to find out the signal sensivity of any smart phones anywhere (specs, manufacturer, etc.). Overview: The RF Signal Detector from Wilson Electronics is a quad-band detector that finds the available cellular signals in any location and displays signal attributes on the detector’s LCD screen. This signal detector can be paired with a variety of Wilson antennas to map the local cellular frequency environment and find the direction of the cell tower that provides the strongest signal. This allows you to precisely point a directional antenna so a Wilson signal booster can maximize indoor cellular coverage. The Signal Detector’s LCD screen displays the frequency of a detected signal, the range of pass bandwidth in megahertz (MHz) and the signal strength in decibels (dB). Easy-to-use button controls located just under the screen allow the user to move between frequency bands and channels. This device works with the 800 MHz (Cellular), 1900 MHz (PCS), 2100 MHz (AWS) and 700 MHz LTE (bands12 and 13) frequency bands. The RF Signal Detector is the perfect tool to help you optimize a Wilson signal booster installation or tune a directional antenna. FEATURES: Detects and displays available signal frequency, bandwidth and strength Works with 700, 800, 1900 and 2100 (AWS) MHz spectrum bands Configurable with a variety of Wilson antennas Detects available signal indoors or outdoors Switches easily between frequency bands and channels INSTALLER BENEFITS Determine which cellular signals, including 3G & 4G, are available for any location Find the strongest available signal Map the local cellular frequency environment Precisely position directional antennas for optimum performance Maximize signal coverage indoors. An Optional RF Signal Detector Accessory Kit (308410) Includes: Wide Band Directional Antenna w/ N Female Connector 304411, Antenna Pole Mounting Assembly 901117, 2' Extension Cable RG58U Cable 951134). These are NOT a consumer Product. We have both the RF Signal Detector and the RF Signal Detector Accessory Kit. We use these whenever we install a cell phone amplifier. We also will do a site survey to determine if your location is even a candidate for a cell phone amplifer, if you are within 50 miles of Shingletown, CA. There is a $35.00 charge (plus milage) for this service.
