In 1885 and in 1887, color changes were made designating the Infantry and the Cavalry from the 1872 colors- See larger view. Normally only worn on the fatigue uniforms (Sack Coat and Undress Coat). But sometimes used on the Dress Frock Coat for Undress Occasions. Shoulder boards for uniforms are sold in pairs. Branch of service colors are: Artillery - Red, Cavalry - 1872-1886 Lemon Yellow / 1887-1898 Dark Yellow, Chaplain - Black w/Cross or Shepherd's Crook, Engineer - Black w/E.C., Infantry - 1872-1884 Sky Blue / 1885-1898 White, Medical - Black w/M.S., Paymaster - Black w/P.D., Quartermaster - Black w/Q.M., Signal Corps - Black w/S.S. Staff, including ALL Generals - Black. For 1855 through 1871 Shoulder boards: See Civil War Shoulder Boards. Except for 1st Lieutenant and Captain, they are the same for all branches except Cavalry from 1886 on, Infantry from 1885 on and Chaplains from 1880 on. Shoulder Boards are NOT included with coats, but are available for an additional cost. You must add these item to the cart separately. |

This is the embroidered insignia. It is Gold Bullion for Civil War & Indian Wars. The small insignia (Cap) is for use on Kepi's and Forage Caps; while the large insignia (Hat) is for use on Slouch Hats and Hardee Hats. Normally supplied loose (not attached to hat/cap), but can be sewn on, when purchased WITH a hat or cap for an additional amount. |
